New Vancouver HVAC Bylaws in 2026 — What Homeowners Must Know

Noise Bylaw Updates

Vancouver noise bylaws for HVAC equipment: maximum 55 dB at the property line during daytime (7 AM-10 PM) and 45 dB at night. New heat pumps and AC units must meet these limits. Units over 55 dB require noise mitigation. Condo stratas may have stricter limits. Choose equipment with published sound ratings.

Emission Regulations

The City of Vancouver has discussed zero-emission heating requirements for new construction. While existing homes are not affected, new home construction may require heat pumps instead of gas furnaces. The BC Building Code now requires minimum 95% AFUE for new furnaces and SEER 14+ for heat pumps.

Carbon Tax and Energy Costs

The BC carbon tax continues to increase by $15/tonne annually. In 2026, this adds approximately $4-5/GJ to natural gas. For a typical home using 75-110 GJ/year, the carbon tax adds $300-550/year to the gas bill. This makes heat pumps increasingly cost-competitive with gas furnaces.
