Some Radiators Are Cold? Diagnosis Guide for Metro Vancouver Homes
If some radiators in your home are hot while others remain cold, you are dealing with one of the most common hydronic heating problems. This imbalance can usually be resolved without replacing your entire system, but identifying the correct cause is key to applying the right solution. Trapped Air in Radiators
The most common cause of cold radiators is trapped air inside the radiator. When air accumulates in a radiator, it prevents hot water from filling the unit, leaving the top or entire radiator cold. Bleeding your radiators is a simple procedure you can do yourself. You will need a radiator key, which is available at any hardware store, and a small container to catch any water that drips out. Open the bleed valve on the cold radiator by turning the key counterclockwise. You will hear a hissing sound as the air escapes. Once water starts to flow steadily, close the valve. If you have multiple cold radiators, bleed them starting with the lowest floor and working your way up. If radiators need frequent bleeding, there may be a more significant issue with air ingress into your system.
System Imbalance and Valve Issues
If bleeding the radiators does not resolve the problem, the issue may be a system imbalance or valve problem. In hydronic systems, radiators closest to the boiler naturally receive the hottest water first. If your system has never been properly balanced, some radiators may receive more flow than others. Balancing involves adjusting the lockshield valves on each radiator to achieve even heat distribution throughout the home. Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) can also cause radiators to remain cold if they are stuck in the closed position or if the pin inside the valve mechanism is seized. Try removing the TRV head and checking whether the pin moves freely. If the pin is stuck, gently tapping it can sometimes free it. If the valve body itself is faulty, it will need professional replacement.
Sludge and Magnetite Buildup
Over time, hydronic heating systems can accumulate sludge, magnetite (black iron oxide), and other debris that restricts water flow through radiators. This is especially common in systems with cast iron radiators or steel pipe that has corroded over time. Sludge buildup typically affects radiators on the lower floors first because the debris settles in the lowest points of the system. If your radiators warm up slowly, make gurgling sounds after being bled, or have cold spots at the bottom while the top is hot, sludge is likely the cause. A professional system flush or power flush can remove accumulated debris and restore proper circulation. In severe cases, individual radiator removal and cleaning may be necessary. Magnetite filters can be installed on your system to prevent future buildup.
