Carbon Monoxide (CO)

Sources: gas furnaces with cracked heat exchangers, boilers with incomplete combustion, gas water heaters with blocked flues, gas fireplaces with poor draft, and attached garages (vehicle exhaust). Health effects: headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion — above 400 PPM can be fatal. Detection: CO detectors required on every floor. Prevention: annual inspection of all gas appliances.

Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Formaldehyde

NO2: produced by gas combustion — gas stoves and furnaces. Short-term exposure: respiratory irritation. Formaldehyde: off-gasses from building materials, furniture, and some insulation. Long-term exposure: respiratory issues. Both are reduced by proper ventilation — use exhaust fans when cooking and consider an HRV/ERV for continuous fresh air.

VOCs and Other Pollutants

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): from paints, cleaners, air fresheners, and new furniture. HVAC can help by: using MERV 11-13 filters, running the fan continuously for air circulation, and installing a UV air purifier or activated carbon filter. Avoid ozone-generating air purifiers — they create a lung irritant.

Safety Reminder

If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the property and contact emergency services or the appropriate gas emergency authority. Do not remain inside — exit the building immediately and call for help from outside.
